Some are entranced by the finnish sauna because of its history; others like it for the health benefits and the social experience it offers

Most of the people who have looked into the history of the finnish sauna agree that the use of a 'sweat house' was for the purpose of cleansing. It is also agreed that this cleansing ritual was probably used all over the world. However, it wasn't until after the 16th century that the finnish sauna had been recognized.

By the late 19th century the finnish sauna was very popular, and even though it is not a finnish invention, nor has it ever been their private property, Finland now has at least one sauna for every three of its population. Some say it's the health benefits of this particular sauna that has made it so popular in Finland and has caused its popularity to grow substantially in North America. Others say it is the rituals and the positive social experience that a person can have while participating.

Want to know what they mean by social experience? Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your finnish sauna: If you plan on participating in one make sure you have the time to really sit back and relax and it's always fun to bring a friend; it's best not to eat anything heavy before starting, but drinking plenty of water before and afterwards is always a good idea; using a towel helps your comfort level while sitting on the wooden benches; by intermittently throwing water on the rocks you can help to temporarily bring up the humidity in the dry room; if birch branches are available use them to get your blood flowing; and finally, don't force yourself to enjoy the heat - if you're feeling too hot then leave, you can always go back later.

Whether you are using the finnish sauna for the health benefits or for the social experience it is important to remember to be in the moment and enjoy yourself.
